Learning Knows No Borders

This spring, the Belin Blank Center will offer educators a wide variety of classes that strengthen knowledge and skills in gifted education, fulfill requirements for the State of Iowa TAG endorsement, and apply to the new Recognition of Global Talent Development program that culminates in a certificate from the Center.  The Center continues to emphasize its commitment to eliminating the geographic boundaries for learning: all opportunities for teachers are available online this spring.

Two different three-credit-hour courses are offered online, as well as on-campus: Identification of Students for Gifted Programs, taught by Dr. Susan Assouline, and Program Models in Gifted Education, facilitated by Dr. Laurie Croft.

Workshops open in January with Special Topics: Middle School for High Ability (1 semester hour, Patricia Curley, M.E.). They continue in February/March with Administrative & Policy Issues in Gifted Education (2 semester hours, Randy Lange, Ph.D). The final workshop for spring semester will be Math Programming for High Ability Students (1 semester hour, Ann Shoplik, Ph.D.), beginning near the end of March.

In addition, the Center is featuring two excellent Spring Webinars. The Cognitive Abilities Test, presented by David Lohman, Ph.D., on January 31, 2013, explores the use of the CogAT, especially the new Form 7, for its role in the identification of gifted students. The second Webinar, Anti-Intellectualism & Other Challenges to Gifted Education, presented by Nicholas Colangelo, Director of the Belin Blank Center, on April 4, 2013, examines our national history of anti-intellectualism, its effects on gifted education, and additional challenges to effective programming.  Both Webinars will offer credit options (1 semester hour) facilitated by Laurie Croft, Administrator for Professional Development; both credit options will provide an automatic tuition scholarship for 50% of the graduate-level tuition.
