We have many exciting changes to tell you about related to the Iowa Online AP Academy for the 2014-2015 school year!
The Iowa Online AP Academy has been in existence at the Belin-Blank Center for over 10 years. In that time, the academy has had very high student retention rates (upwards of 80%), compared to 20% – 50% nationally. We know that much of the success of the Iowa Online AP Academy is due to the hard work and commitment of the teachers mentoring academy students in their home schools. We’ve been busy rounding up resources to help further support those mentors and their students in the academy.
First, we’ve developed two new resources for all Iowa Online AP Academy site coordinators and mentors. This spring we are releasing the Iowa Online AP Academy Site Coordinator and Mentor Handbook, as well as, a power point presentation to share with students and parents who are interested in learning more about the Iowa Online AP Academy.
Second, we’re working with Apex Learning (the provider of the AP courses) to host a webinar for all Iowa Online AP Academy mentors and the course instructors. Through mentor feedback, we know that many of you would like to have the chance to meet and speak with the course instructors before the beginning of the course. We hear you! Watch for more information this summer for the upcoming webinar in August.
We have also made a few procedural changes to the Iowa Online AP Academy. The change you will probably notice first is the change in school and student enrollment. To enroll students in the Iowa Online AP Academy for the 2014-2015, schools must start by re-registering. You can begin this process here. Starting in Fall 2014, we will also begin assessing schools a course fee for each student dropping an Iowa Online AP Academy course more than 14 days after the start of the course. You can find all of the details related to this change on the new registration form and the Iowa Online AP Academy hand book.
