AP Exams: Why Not?

May is several months away, but it is never too early for Iowa Online AP Academy students to starting thinking about whether or not to take the AP exam in their subject. For many students, the AP exam can be an anxiety-provoking process, and many students who are prepared end up not taking the AP exam. How can mentors and educators encourage students to take the AP exam? Here is our list of the top 10 reasons to take AP exams!

  1. Taking the AP exam does not impact your course grade. The AP exam is completely separate and works towards demonstrating what you know so that you can earn college credit.
  2. The AP exam offers an additional challenge. Taking AP exams can be challenging, but also offers a great experience to push yourself in your AP subject.
  3. Colleges and universities recognize the effort even if you do not receive course credit. Research shows that students who take AP exams tend to be better prepared for college, even if their score is below a 3.
  4. The Iowa Online AP Academy offers free AP Exam Review sessions for all Iowa AP students (even those enrolled in non-online courses). AP Exam Review can be a good way to test your skills and ensure you’re well-prepared for the AP exam!
  5. The AP exam takes about the same amount of time as taking the ACT. Most subjects take two to three hours and are comprised of just two sections.
  6. Taking the AP exam provides an opportunity to demonstrate what you know. For many students, being able to successfully answer questions on the AP exam highlights how much they’ve learned and how far they’ve come since beginning the course.
  7. You can earn college credit for scores of 3 or higher. Earning college credit means more time to take advantage of other opportunities, like internships, studying abroad, or graduating early.
  8. Cost doesn’t have to be an issue. Often states or districts provide AP exams at a reduced cost to students, but if cost is still a concern, College Board provides a fee reduction waiver to help students take exams.
  9. You can achieve recognition from College Board through AP Scholar Awards. Students who perform well on AP exams are eligible for a variety of AP awards, which are impressive to college admissions committees.
  10. Why not? Even though taking AP exams can be a stressful and intimidating process, you will never know if you could have passed the exam if you don’t try. Give it a shot!
